Check your light direction first: lens flares only look real when the light source is behind or to the side of your subject (backlit), not when the light is coming from the front 2. Create a new layer and try Filter, then Render, then Lens Flare \u2014 Photoshop won&#039;t let you apply it to a blank layer 3. Instead, make a Stamp Visible layer (Shift, Option or Alt, Command or Ctrl, then E), which duplicates everything you see, then apply the Lens Flare filter to that layer, positioning it over your light source 4. To separate the flare from the image, fill that same layer with black (Shift, then Delete), then reapply the same Lens Flare filter from the Filter menu, which repeats your last settings 5. Change the layer&#039;s blend mode from Normal to Screen so the black disappears and only the flare remains, now on its own movable, editable layer 6. Adjust the flare&#039;s color with Hue\/Saturation (Command or Ctrl, then U) and soften it with a Gaussian Blur so it doesn&#039;t look artificially sharp 7.
